Village les Eyzies

The Gîte is located just a stone's throw from Les Eyzies, a village known worldwide for its many caves and prehistoric paintings. Situated in the heart of the Périgord Noir and on the banks of the Vézère river, our campsite in Les Eyzies is an ideal starting point to discover the Dordogne.

A gîte in the World Capital of Prehistory - Les Eyzies!

The Vézère valley has many caves and prehistoric shelters. Many of these sites have been classified as World Heritage Sites by UNESCO as "Prehistoric Sites and Ornate Caves of the Vézère Valley". Most of these caves can be found in Les Eyzies or its surroundings. Some examples of prehistoric sites recognised by UNESCO are the Font de Gaume cave, the Combarelles cave, or the troglodytic villages of La Roque st Christophe and La Madeleine.

All of these riches mean that Les Eyzies claims the status of World Capital of Prehistory. Moreover, the first remains of our ancestor, the Cro-Magnon man, have been found in Les Eyzies.

No wonder then that the National Museum of Prehistory was opened in Les Eyzies, in the fortress that was built against the cliff.
